The Ricanne Hadrian Initiative for Community Organizing has published the Journal of Community Power Building: Reflections from Community Development Leaders and Practitioners, which presents articles exploring how real people in real situations experience the complicated and challenging process of building community and collective power. A new study by the Chicago Area Fair Housing Alliance, “Mapping the Location of Housing Choice Vouchers,” found that the federal Housing Choice Voucher program reinforces historic patterns of racial and economic segregation in the Chicago metropolitan region. www.cafha.org.
The Children’s Defense Fund published “Where is America Going? In her paper, “The Education and Liberation of the Poor in Community Organizing: The Personal Growth and Transformation of Leaders in the Anti-Displacement Project,” Lindsey P. Credit to the Community: Community Reinvestment and Fair Lending Policy in the U.S., by Dan Immergluck offers a policy history of fair lending laws and CRA. It discusses the history of discrimination and redlining in mortgage and small business markets, including current problems and trends. The Alston/Bannerman Fellowship Program will award its 17th annual grants in 2004. The program is committed to advancing progressive social change by helping to sustain long-time activists of color. It honors those who have devoted their lives to helping communities organize. Each year, 10 fellows receive $15,000 to take sabbaticals for three months or more, using their freedom to engage in community activism and strengthen their ability to contribute to social change. Norman Foundation, Inc. supports efforts that promote economic justice and development through community organizing; work to prevent the disposal of toxics in communities, and to link environmental issues with economic and social justice; and promote civil rights by fighting discrimination and violence and working for equity. The Community Development Institute (CDI) is sponsoring APA/Leadership Plenty, a leadership development program for mid-level professionals in community development and urban planning. Based on a national model developed by the Pew Partnership for Civic Change and adapted in conjunction with the American Planning Association, APA/Leadership Plenty is the only leadership development program that combines training and personal coaching. The Rudy Bruner Award for Urban Excellence is given to urban places that demonstrate the successful integration of effective process, meaningful values and good design. Winners are distinguished by their social, economic and contextual contributions to the urban environment. The RBA awards one Gold Medal of $50,000 and four Silver Medals of $10,000 each.
