The Center for an Urban Future released two new publications. The Big Idea: A Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Effective Policy Reports is the first published guide to the policy writing process. The Guide to U.S. Foundations, Their Trustees, Officers, and Donors, published by the Foundation Center, offers information on 65,000 private grant-making organizations. The French-American Foundation has published Equal from the Start: Promoting Educational Opportunity for all Preschool Children – Learning from the French Experience, which examines how France offers earlier access and additional resources to children attending preschools in disadvantaged communities. $10 or download free as a pdf file.

The Community Action Guide to Teacher Quality is based on the experiences of eight local education funds that engaged their communities in exploring the quality of teaching in their public schools. The eight funds were supported by a grant from the US Department of Education administered by the Public Education Network. The Yale School of Management, the Goldman Sachs Foundation, and the Pew Charitable Trusts (www.pewtrusts.com) have joined together to form the Partnership on Nonprofit Ventures. As a signature event, the Partnership administers the National Business Plan Competition for Nonprofit Organizations, which is open to nonprofits seeking to start or expand successful profit-making ventures.
