Publications Appraising Historic Properties, released by the National Trust for Historic Prevention, offers tips on finding qualified appraisers and the valuation process. Published by Preservation Books. 28 pp.; $10. The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy has released The State of Philanthropy 2002, an up-to-date assessment of grantmaking. The Enterprise Foundation has produced a video and workbook, Introduction to Affordable Housing: An Overview to the Skills and Finances Needed to Develop Affordable Housing. NetActions Using the Internet For Outreach and Organizing is a compilation of several of their most popular virtual activist training materials. Lessons Learned: The Metlife Foundations Awards, in the June/July 2002 issue of Community College Journal, explores strategies used by community colleges to improve the quality and effectiveness of their services to low-income youth and adults. Preventing Chronic Homelessness: Effective Approaches Emphasize Flexibility, a report in the July newsletter of the National Resource Center on Homelessness and Mental Illness, finds flexibility in housing and support services essential for helping to decrease chronic homelessness. 800-444-7415. The Joint Center for Poverty Research has published The Interactive Effects of Food Stamps and Housing Assistance, a working paper by Joseph Harkness and Sandra Newman. The paper discusses how the Food Stamp program and publicly financed housing interact. "Community Mapping" from the PolicyLink Equitable Development Toolkit includes more than 20 examples of how mapping supports neighborhood revitalization, community-building, and equitable development. The tools are applicable to affordable housing, land use, project financing, and income and asset building. A Quiet Crisis in America, a report by the Commission on Affordable Housing and Health Facility Needs in the 21st Century, discusses how the growing population of older Americans demands increased attention to their housing and health care needs. |
