The Center for Community Progress (Community Progress) is a national nonprofit established in 2010 to strengthen neighborhoods and improve lives through its work to ensure communities have the systems and capacity to prevent, maintain, and reuse vacant, abandoned, and deteriorated properties. Community Progress serves as the leading national resource for local, state, and federal policies and best practices that address the full cycle of property revitalization. Its programming encompasses direct technical assistance, trainings, conferences, and other learning opportunities, policy education and development, and practitioner-oriented research.

Community Progress recognizes the severe negative impact that vacant, abandoned, and deteriorated properties have on neighborhoods and the people living in them, including economic, social, psychological, environmental, and other harms. Community Progress also recognizes the legacy of unjust laws, policies, and systems that cause some communities to bear an unfair share of this burden. Job Summary
Community Progress seeks an experienced, innovative, collaborative, and mission-driven leader as its President and CEO. The President and CEO reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for determining Community Progress’ long-term strategic direction; leading fund development efforts; shaping communications; overseeing program development and implementation; and guiding daily operations. The President and CEO develops and maintains excellent collaborative relationships with funders and other partners at the local, state, and federal level.

Duties and Essential Job Functions

Provide Mission-Driven and Collaborative Leadership:

  • Foster and sustain a mission-driven spirit of cooperation among staff, board, and colleagues;
  • Cultivate positive communication and shape the organization’s message to support and build the field of vacant, abandoned, and deteriorated property reclamation;
  • Build and maintain strong partnerships with foundations, nonprofits, and government agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, whose work complements and supports Community Progress’ mission;
  • Represent the organization publicly, including at conferences and other events linked to Community Progress’ mission and goals;
  • Work with the Board of Directors and staff to implement Community Progress’ strategic plan; 
  • Provide leadership, direction, and program supervision to staff, including oversight of existing programs and supporting new program development;
  • Ensure that work is data-driven and lead internal program evaluation;
  • Foster staff collaboration, creativity, and professional growth;
  • Recruit new staff, supervise and support staff performance, evaluate staff growth and performance, assign duties and compensation for all staff.

Ensure Fiscal Sustainability and Organizational Accountability:

  • Seek, secure, and administer grants from a range of private and public sector funders;
  • Diversify funding by continuing to grow non-grant funding opportunities;
  • Assist Community Progress’ board of directors in organization’s governance, including financial oversight, and serve as key staff point of contact for board;
  • Develop and supervise the implementation of Community Progress’ policies, management systems, and procedures; assure adherence to all laws and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Significant experience managing staff, programs, and multi-million dollar budgets;
  • Demonstrated commitment to public and community service with an enthusiasm for Community Progress’s mission and values;
  • Knowledge of and prior work experience related to the challenges facing America’s cities as they relate to prevention and reuse of vacant, abandoned, and deteriorated properties, as well as neighborhood stabilization and revitalization;
  • Strategic thinker with ability to identify, prioritize and leverage opportunities for engagement;
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills; ability to make complex information accessible to a wide variety of audiences;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Ability to multitask and manage stress well in a fast-paced environment with frequently shifting priorities;
  • Strong relationship-building skills and track record;
  • Sharp attention to details as well as an appreciation for the big picture;
  • Deep understanding of the federal, state, and local policies and practices that have historically contributed, and continue to contribute, to the concentration of vacancy, abandonment, and property deterioration in underserved communities;
  • Commitment to nonpartisanship and a demonstrated ability to collaborate with individuals, groups, and policymakers with opposing points of view and diverse political perspectives.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten (10) years of experience working in the field of community development and neighborhood stabilization.

Preferred:

  • Graduate degree in public policy, planning, law, or related field and a minimum of five (5) years working specifically on the prevention and reuse of vacant, abandoned, or deteriorated properties.
