Senior Manager, Communications

The National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders (NALCAB) represents and serves 100+ nonprofit organizations across the nation, which includes real estate developers, business lenders, economic development corporations, credit unions, and consumer counseling agencies. NALCAB implements responsible, market-based strategies for strengthening underserved communities, rebuilding the ladder of economic mobility for low- and moderate-income Americans and supporting the economic integration of immigrants through equitable neighborhood development, investing in small business and building family financial wellness. In close alignment with its core programmatic activities, NALCAB operates a fellowship to invest in next-generation leadership within its Network, hosts a national conference and implements a training institute focused on culturally and linguistically relevant asset building services.

Summary Statement:
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Senior Manager, Communications will be responsible for the development of NALCAB’s communication strategy and will contribute to NALCAB’s strategic planning process. The Senior Manager, Communications will develop a communications plan for NALCAB, directly managing communications activities that promote, enhance and protect the organization’s brand reputation, and other duties as assigned. This position will be responsible for the development, integration, and implementation of a broad range of public relations activities relative to the strategic direction and positioning of the organization and leadership. This individual will be an ambassador for the organization and will need to build relationships with the media. The goal is to advance the organization’s position with relevant constituents, as well as to drive broader awareness and donor support for the organization. The Senior Manager, Communications will be responsible for NALCAB’s varied and integrated communications products and services including: newsletters and other print publications, web, and other online communications; templates and communication support to members; media and public relations; and marketing.

Key Responsibilities/Duties:
Communications Strategy, Vision and Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance NALCAB’s brand identity; broaden awareness of programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences
  • Create marketing/public relations strategy that will allow NALCAB to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high level external audiences, including the media and key influencers.
  • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Serve as a communications counselor to NALCAB leadership.
  • Assists in development of national training and conference strategies and schedules, and coordinates related promotional project activities. Attends national training and conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Communications Operations

  • Oversee development of all NALCAB print communications including annual report, marketing collateral materials and electronic communications including the NALCAB website and new media; manage relationships with associated vendors.
  • Communicate with media to promote and/or impact the organization
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, and prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed.
  • Actively engage, cultivate and mange press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding NALCAB programs, special events, public announcements and other projects
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications function including planning and staff development.
  • Serves as the secondary spokesperson for NALCAB. The Executive Director is the primary spokesperson.
  • This position may supervise one or more employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Master’s degree in relevant subject area or commensurate experience
  • At least 10 years’ experience in communications and/or marketing, preferably including non-profit sector experience
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with leadership and NALCAB members
  • Extensive successful writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications media
  • Demonstrated skill and comfort in proactively building relationships with top tier reporters and editors, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
  • Experience with social media and its administration
  • Experience with graphic design and social media coding, preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
